My Approach as a Counselor

I am a former high school teacher turned counseling resident. I received a B.A. in Classical Studies from Virginia Tech and a Master’s in Teaching from Hollins University. I taught high school Latin for seven years before returning to graduate school to become a Clinical Mental Health Counselor. I love to help clients navigate life’s changes and challenges, and to find meaning in the midst of it all. I particularly enjoy working with adolescents and young adults as they explore their sense of self and life goals.

I often approach my work from an existential-humanistic perspective, mixed with mindfulness interventions (particularly from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). I believe that the therapeutic space can be a place to explore and discuss what ultimately matters most to each individual, as well as how to align those values with actions. I tailor my approach to each unique person, so I pull from other therapeutic models as needed. Most importantly, I work with a person-centered foundation, taking care to ensure that my clients feel heard, understood, accepted, and supported.

I am excited to work with individuals with a wide range of presenting concerns, backgrounds, and identities. My particular clinical interests include anxiety, OCD, grief and loss, relationship challenges, body image concerns, and life transitions. My personal background helps me connect with others trying to match their life path to what brings them joy or a sense of purpose, and my previous experience in education gives me particular insight into the stressors that both teachers and students face.

Outside of Counseling

Outside of the office, I enjoy all yarn crafts, especially knitting and spinning, as well as reading, hiking, drinking tea, and playing cello and harp. I also love spending time with animals, especially my two pet rabbits and my recently adopted dog.
