Trauma and Stressor Related Disorders

Following a stressful or traumatic event, it is possible to experience psychological distress that can result in a trauma or stress related disorder. Symptoms of these disorders include anhedonic and dysphoric symptoms, externalized anger and aggression, and dissociation.  In addition, trauma disorders can cause nightmares and flashbacks, anxiety, fear, and depression.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

A stress disorder that develops quickly following a traumatic event. Individuals with PTSD may be easily angered, engage in reckless behavior, have higher levels of sensitivity, and be irrationally fearful of potential traumatic occurrences.

Acute Stress Disorder (ASD)

ASD applies to those affected by the symptoms of PTSD, but only for the duration of a month or less. If these symptoms exceed a month, then the diagnosis could be PTSD.

Childhood Trauma Disorders

Emotional and behavioral problems that stem from traumatic events that occurred during childhood. Such events can include child neglect, child physical abuse, child psychological abuse, or child sexual abuse.
